In our previous conversations, I touched on what managing change is, how different stages affect the life environment, and also offered some tool(s) and suggestions for your consideration. Ya!
In this latest elucidation, we are going to talk about what it is to know thyself, which is an instrumental element to personal change.
The topic of self-management or “knowing thyself” was coined by Peter F Drucker. A business management guru who discussed the importance of self-knowledge in one’s personal and professional career life.
Now, I am not going to get all HEADY and CEREBRAL on you. I am though, going to use his thoughts conceptually to present a manner of thinking. I am talking about being in control and knowing your Personal Power
Drucker put forth the following statement ” do not try to change yourself – you are unlikely to succeed. work to improve the way you achieve” (2005). Think about it, if you lack self-knowledge or fail to plan, you plan to FAIL! That is a real BOO!
In the environment scan post, we talked about the importance of doing a scan (internal and external) and asking the hard uncomfortable questions. The scan and questions are the ideas to structure a process to maximize the positives of the CHANGE!
In this endeavor (and this will be an adventure, UBetcha!!) will aid in gaining a better knowledge of self.
I propose acting like a reporter and examine the — who, what, where and how — of your life. We will call them the “4” Quadrants.
FIRST….Who “R” U?
To do anything well, you’ll need to cultivate a deep understanding of yourself. Period! No, I am not saying this kind of knowledge happens overnight, By Golly! but it can happen. It is all about setting intentions to not only know what your strengths and weakness are but also how you learn and work, and what your values are.
It is all about setting intentions to not only know what your strengths and less stronger areas, but also gain a knowing of your values and how you learn and work.
Enhance your Super Powers! You see, in knowing all this, YOU come into the fullness and beauty of SELF. We can perform only from our strength! It benefits us to learn to develop ourselves in immeasurable ways.
SECOND….What Can U Do?
To be able to manage yourself, you must ask, What are my values? This question has everything to do with — what you will and will not tolerate! Tolerance is easier said than done.
When we allow, people will put us in some very interesting and challenging situations. However, you do not have to attend every drama-laden, angst-ridden, occurrence in your life!
Check it out — to interact with people whose value system is unacceptable or incompatible with yours leads to both frustration and non-activity…..Edit people out of your life who challenge your values Ruthlessly and Often! I approve of this message……
- Set intentions
- Have integrity
- Seek balance
THIRD….How Do U Do U?
Interestingly, research has shown few people know how they get things done. I think we can potentially agree, we know that different people do things differently. HA!
So, what am I trying to say…..ask yourself how you learn, work, and achieve. This may be an even more important question than asking about your strengths.
Like your strengths, how you learn, work, and achieve is unique and a matter of personality. It comes down to “2” things…what rocks your boat and does it add value to you to manage change?
I touch on this when I suggest tools because something that works for me, may not jive with you at all. It is like listening and reading. Some prefer to acquire and absorb information better by reading it.
On the other hand, some individuals are audio centered, and fair better at absorbing information by listening.
FOURTH….Where R U Going?
Equally important and a return to bullet #2, when you know the answer to these questions about what you will and will not tolerate, you enable yourself to say to any challenge, opportunity, or offer, YES! with confidence.
Whether that is a YES….I can handle that, I can do that, or I will do that! The choice is definitively in your hands.
It makes for the kind of results you can expect because this is “who YOU are.” You know the answers to the three questions concerning your strengths, values, and achievements, and thus, should be able to commit and decide where you do not belong.
Success through commitment
